Why did you develop JangleBox?
There
already are plenty of compressors.
Simple: there wasn’t an
off-the-shelf compression pedal that gave us, as guitar
players, the sound we wanted. We tried many models, ran combinations
in line, but
couldn’t achieve the clean, driving, chiming sustain like the
studio compression on
our favorite recordings. And, as is the reality for many guitarists,
buying an expensive
commercial studio compressor like a Fairchild® or UREI® wasn't
an option.
We were initially inspired by the sound (if not the humming) of
the onboard unit
that was used on the Rickenbacker® 370-12 RM guitar, but
that circuit wasn't available as a separate, commercially-issued
outboard unit.
For years, various techs and engineers tried to create the circuit we wanted. But it wasn’t until we connected with a respected sound expert who modified our specs, optimized the voicing, and greatly reduced overall noise levels that we finally had a box we loved.
So, JangleBox is the secret to creating
that great jangly guitar sound? More like
the final piece of the puzzle. There are many elements that contribute
to getting “the sound”: the guitar and amp you
use, your playing style, additional
effects, etc. Obviously, sound is very subjective.
We simply believe that JangleBox is a significant component in helping
capture
that beautiful chime you hear in the music of the Beatles, the
Byrds, Tom Petty,
REM, the Church, the Pretenders, and so many others.
Is JangleBox a “transparent” compressor?
“Transparent” can be an ambiguous or misleading term. JangleBox
is better
characterized as an effect that enhances your guitar tone, but doesn’t
distort it.
JangleBox adds chime and sustain; the BRIGHT setting acts
as a treble booster.
Think of the sound in terms of songs
you already know so well: “Ticket
to Ride”
(Beatles), “Turn! Turn! Turn!” (Byrds), “This Charming
Man” (Smiths), “Listen to
Her Heart” (Tom Petty), “Fall on Me” (REM), “Can’t
Feel My Soul” (Teenage Fan
Club), “Back on the Chain Gang” (Pretenders)… The
jangle sound is as adaptable
as it is timeless.
To further
enhance your existing sound, JangleBox also works well with
other effects — reverb, chorus, delay, overdrive, etc.
And, keep in mind that JangleBox
has true bypass, so you can isolate other effects as necessary.
Can (or will) JangleBox make my 6-string guitar sound like a 12-string?
Of
course not — it’s a compressor, not one of those weird “12-string
emulators”!
What JangleBox will give your 6-string is a strong, ringing sustain,
and a heightened
evenness of tone. And with 12-string guitars, the sound is
absolutely fantastic.
How is the unit powered? With a standard 9V battery (included with each JangleBox),
or you can use a 9VDC
(with center pin positive) wall socket adapter (not included).
Will JangleBox work with a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power unit? Yes. Our customers report great results using the Voodoo
Lab unit with a center positive
polarity converter cable.
Are there any alternative power adapters? Virtually any 500mA (or higher) adapter will work fine.
As long as the output of the
adaptor is 9VDC pin positive.
JangleBox isn’t the cheapest stomp box…
JangleBox is a terrific value in terms of quality. Unlike most off-the-shelf
stomp
boxes, every JangleBox is constructed and hand-assembled in the
U.S.A. with top
grade components (including carbon film resistors, conductive plastic
sealed potentiometers,
and high-frequency electrolitics for better filtering). It’s
thoroughly tested
before shipping. We don’t mass produce — we build tens,
not thousands, at a
time. No other pedal sounds like a JangleBox.
Another way to consider cost: guitarists often try to emulate the ’60s
guitar
jangle by doubling the compression (running two compressor pedals in
line). You’ll
only need to buy one JangleBox.
Would running two JangleBox units in line further
enhance “the
sound”?
One’s plenty. We appreciate that a few gearheads and pros tell
us they use two
JangleBoxes to isolate the treble boost on one unit for soloing, but
those are exceptions.
Can the JangleBox circuit be configured as an onboard unit for guitars? We think that a stomp box pedal is preferable to carving
out a guitar and voiding
the manufacturer’s warranty. It also allows more user flexibility
if you have several
guitars.
Where can I buy a JangleBox? You can mail us a check or money order (click CONTACT);
call toll-free and we'll take your order over the phone (click CONTACT);
or click the ORDER button
and order through our secure shopping cart (this is quickest).
What is the general delivery time from when
an order is placed? Because of our meticulous quality control,
and consistently high consumer demand, it can take from one to
six weeks before we're able to ship a JangleBox
to you. There simply is no way we can “rush assemble” these
boxes. Recently
we've added additional assemblers in an effort to shorten delivery
times. We
appreciate your patience — you’re going to love your
JangleBox!
